The plan, the record.
What the Rottnest Island Authority has published, what we are asking for instead, and where you can read it for yourself.
The sequence
How we got to here.
The remodel exists because of two pieces of infrastructure: a bypass road around the Wadjemup Aboriginal Burial Ground and a northern service corridor. Ground-penetrating radar found burial-like anomalies beneath the old access road to the course, and that changed everything.

Before 2026
Radar finds burial-like anomalies
Surveys under the existing road into the course reveal the access route runs through the Aboriginal burial ground. A new road is needed, and the course sits in its path.

Hole 9 closes
The ninth hole is taken out of play to make room for essential infrastructure. Pars on remaining holes are adjusted so the course still counts nine.
-
Aug 2026
Remodel works begin
Holes 3, 6, 7 and 8 are reworked, new greens are built, and the fence is realigned and raised to about 1.5 metres to keep quokkas off the playing surface. The course stays open throughout.

Scheduled completion
Works are timed for the growing season so new turf has the best chance to establish. New pedestrian access sits about 100 metres north of the old one, adding roughly 150 metres to the walk from the Kingsway bike path. Vehicles use Strue Road.

The Longest Day of Golf
The island golf club’s Cancer Council WA fundraiser runs across the same three days. A reminder of what this course does for the community.
Our alternative plan
Protect the burial ground. Keep the course.
A whole nine
A properly sequenced nine holes with a traditional par 3, 4 and 5 mix, long enough to host club competition and still fun for a first-timer.
Open consultation
Publish the layout options considered, the reasoning for the one chosen, and a clear channel for golfers and the club to respond before works finish.
Wildlife and culture, together
Quokka-safe fencing, respectful access and memorialisation of the burial ground, delivered alongside golf, not instead of it.
We will update this page as the Authority releases more detail and as our supporters’ questions are answered.

Decisions about Rottnest are made by people who answer to voters. Tell your local Member of Parliament and the Minister responsible for the island that you want a full, public golf course kept in play.
